Andrée Chedid is the author of over thirty-nine books, among them poetry, fiction, short stories, theatre, film writing, essays, and children's stories. In addition to English translations, Chedid's works have been published in fifteen other languages. She is considered a great contemporary writer of French literature and has received numerous awards. Her early education was in Egypt (she was born there of Syrio-Lebanese parents), and after attending schools in Paris she returned to Cairo and earned a degree in journalism there from the American University. Chedid has come in contact with many cultures and speaks French and English fluently, with knowledge of spoken Arabic.
