Vladimir Charov was born in 1952 to a writer father, Alexander, whose popular children’s stories were banned. Before himself being barred from his profession, Charov spent many years teaching history at university while writing novels he did not dare publish. Beginning in 1991, with Pas à pas, he would publish five novels in the next six years, including Est-ce à moi de m’en réjouir? (1996), Les Répétitions (Éditions Actes Sud, 1998), and La Vieille petite fille (1998) soon to be published in translation by Éditions Phébus.
