Description
Mamma, li Turchi!—Italian for «Mama, the Turks!—blends the destinies of a rich lesbian in her sixties who, as a child, saw her mother deported to the concentration camps; a libertine filmmaker who has fallen in love with a young girl; and a revolutionary turned orthodox monk. The characters all have the same passion for Italy and are intent on learning its vibrant, romantic language. They share a taste for happiness, non-conformity, and resistance to the new moral order. The spirited secret society they form is indeed a most unusual group, the last of a dying breed at what Gabriel Matzneff himself calls «the sunset of a certain form of Epicurean existence.» Mamma, il Turchi has been nominated for the Prix Renaudot.
