Description
For the past 40 years, Pierre Vidal-Naquet has demonstrated in various works how a historical text always speaks through multiple voices. Moreover, the interpretation of a text can evolve significantly over the course of centuries depending on the ideological and political concerns of the period. This work presents two collections of writings produced by the celebrated historian over the past 20 years. The first studies three of the principal historians of Ancient Greece—Herodotus, Thucydides and Diodorus—through various modern interpretations of their work. The second concerns the re-appropriation of Athenian democracy by Europeans in the 18th and 19th centuries and its importance for both French revolutionaries and Greek fighters who struggled to free their country from Turkish occupation.
