Description
The controversy over the nature of animals has been kept alive for so many years for the simple reason that it is closely related to the question of the nature of man. Religious, philosophical and scientific approaches to the issue are all charged with meaning. Observing differences between humans and animals has always served to prove and justify the superiority of man over beast. Today, ecologists and animal rights activists have re-instigated the debate. Armelle LeBras-Chopard attempts to understand how our discourse on animals, while it initially seeks to legitimize iniquitous relationships between man and animal, is in fact merely a detour to introduce discrimination within humanity. LeBras-Chopard brings us a fascinating re-reading of the great philosophers (Descartes, Lamarck, Darwin) with a highly original approach.
