Description
The Garden of Eden is the second story in Genesis, right after Creation. According to religious sources, it is the account of a malediction, from which rabbis and priests drew ideas of sacrifice and penitence. The author argues that this second account is in fact the summary of the human adventure, revealing mankind’s most precious and most dangerous gift given to him—freedom. At the end, we are offered the perspective of spiritual realization, or Fall, in the absurd and the void. Nothomb examines, line by line, the many problems with the translation of the "Second Story" from its original Hebrew, and the misconceptions which have been generated as a result. An atheistic interpretation, Le Second récit is nonetheless spiritual.
Author
Paul Nothomb : Paul Nothomb was born in Belgium in 1913. He obtained his doctorate in Hebrew from the prestigious Langues-Orientales in Paris. He taught for many years at the University of Paris-Nanterre.
