Narrating the sequence of events that led up to the horrifying rape four times, one for each of the assailants, Wolf creates a gripping tale that leaves no motivation unexplored. Through the eyes of Kheir, the brash young Arab closer to his victim than he possibly could have imagined, Lionel, a gay teenager abused by his drunken father, Fabrice, the confident, perpetually drugged leader, and Honoré, an intelligent black kid trying to break free from the dead-end group, we relive the awful event over and over, each time learning something new about the rapists, their victim, and their relations to each other. The result is a fascinating, personalized account of an all too common tragedy.
