Description
Wolfgang Köhler, (1887-1967), the renowned behavioral psychologist, was named director of the prestigious Institute of Psychology in Berlin at age 35. He founded, with Kurt Koffka and Max Wertheimer, one of the twentieth century’s most influential scientific movements: Gestalttheorie, or, Gestalt Psychology, as it is known here. Köhler was the first to erect bridges between phenomenology and physics, empirical research and the material sciences, revolutionizing the field with his findings. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering research on primate intelligence during World War I.
This penetrating intellectual biography covers the great epistemological debates Köhler participated in during the 1920’s, exposing more systematically than ever the founding elements of the Berlin Gestalt and Köhler’s contribution to the difficult debate currently at large between the cognitive and physical sciences.
