It exceeds it and encompasses it, even if the United States wishes to sit on its throne alone. Not to recognize this distinction is to take the part for the whole.” Nair shrewdly makes his case first by defining the Market Empire, then by considering its relation to American power, the Arab world, Europe’s burgeoning political institution, and the Southern Hemisphere. Furthermore, he looks to the future, spelling out this new empire’s probable (and possibly devastating) implications for our civilization.

Sami Nair : Sami Nair is a professor of political science at the University of Paris VIII. L’Empire face à la diversité is being published simultaneously in Spain by Arete (Random House-Mondadori). Nair was appointed Interministerial Representative for Joint Development in the French government, and became a member of the European Parliament in 1999. He is the author of many books, including Le déplacement du monde/ The World on the Move (Kimé, 1996), Politique de civilization/ The Policy of Civilization (Arléa, 1997), L’immigration expliquée à ma fille/ Immigration Explained to my Daughter (Seuil, 1999).
