Description
For generations, young men and women of the Muslim El-Mudi clan have been sent on a solitary journey to Tanzania’s infamous Mount Merou. They are told not to return until they have dreamt three dreams. Only then are they deemed ready for marriage. Bayu, a young sculptor, sets out on this long and perilous voyage. Leaving his village of Mombasa, he discovers other villages and their inhabitants, as well as their different and often disconcerting ways of life. The young artist undergoes a wondrous, arduous trial, and finally returns home to tell his story.
This captivating debut novel takes us on an initiatory journey filled with fascinating details, legends and ancient traditions. Devenne’s forceful narrative and poetic style evoke an Africa we’ve never before encountered: protean and violent, yet tender, funny and sublime.
