Description
Annecy, France, December 1918: the war is over but the trains keep bringing wounded men back from the battlefront. Most of them are severely injured; others seem outwardly unharmed but are nonetheless profoundly shocked. A young novice and nurse named Claire, is part of Dr. Tournier’s team. Along with the psychiatrist, her job is to care for these physically and mentally wounded. Among them, one unknown soldier, mute and cataleptic, it seems will never wake up. His life is gradually revealed to the reader, but remains a mystery to Claire. Moved by his physical beauty and vulnerability, she gradually finds herself facing a dilemma she would have never expected to: renounce her vow of celibacy, or remain in the novitiate. This historical novel, poignant and gripping, depicts the atrocities of the Great War and its consequences on the life of the soldiers and their families as well as the earliest uses of the new science of psychiatry.
