Ever since the arrival on the throne of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in 1999, Morocco has been celebrated by the Western press for its pluralist government, market economy, and enlightened view of women. Though the country seems a peaceful playground to the rich and famous, with their mansions in Tangiers and Marrakesh, the authors warn that Morocco is on the verge of a historic shift as great as the one that awaited Russia in 1916. The situation is now inevitable and imminent. The first reason the authors explain, is because of the country’s underlying social rigidity, preventing any prospect for economic advancement for the poor majority. The other is due to the corruption of the power elite.
