Description
Zero Killed is a story told almost entirely through transcribed telephone calls between four individuals. Two of them are brothers: Andres, the elder, is married to Françoise, and Joseph, the younger, has just been left by his girlfriend Clara (a promising actress gone off to Spain). The four characters’ interconnected phone conversations range from devastatingly funny to hilariously sad, contrasts expressed through mordant dialogue that gives this sparsely wrought novel the feel of a more lengthy tragedy. Advice, regret, hope for reconciliation, loneliness, and the inability to do much to help one another balance out joy and anticipation, tenderness, patience, and love. One word, perhaps said in passing, casually, can tip the scale of one young man’s world, for better or for worse.
