Description
To help an educated or general audience more easily understand and discuss the complex discipline of aesthetics and the philosphy of art, Jacques Morizot and Roger Pouivet led 80 scholars in the development of a comprehensive dictionary. Two hundred and forty entries are explored primarily, although not exclusively, in terms of the major aspects of the field—the ontological, the semiotic, intentionality, and the evaluative.

The Dictionary of the Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art, however, goes beyond the standard definition of dictionary. Among the entries there are questions, posed by the scholars. Questions of aesthetics and the philosophy of art usually include “What is ‘art’?” “What factors are involved in making an aesthetic judgment?” “What should we judge when we judge art?” Here, however, the questions take on a more modern edge—“Who is afraid of contemporary art?” for example, and “What are the philosophical challenges in photography?” Perspectives are thus broadened and opportunities provided for new debates. A bibliography accompanies each entry.
